What is
Pilonidal Sinus?
This is a problem that is mostly seen in the lower back area (between the buttocks – natal cleft).
Hair, dust, and sweat get into the skin there and get infected,
forming a small hole (sinus tract). This causes sores to form inside.
Symptoms
Small hole or lump in the lower abdomen
Yellowish sores or bleeding
Pain, swelling
Increased pain when sitting or walking
Recurrent problem (goes away, comes back)
Complications if left untreated
- Large sores (Abscess)
- Recurrent sores (Chronic sinus)
- Redness, inflammation of the skin
- Very rarely, cancer-like changes (if not treated for a long time)
There is no permanent solution with drugs or ointments.
Surgical techniques:
- Incision & Drainage (I&D) – When the abscess is large, cut and drain it
- Excision & Primary Closure – When the entire hole is removed and stitched
- Excision with Flap Techniques (Karydakis, Limberg flap etc.) – In recurrent/large cases
- Laser treatment – New method, less pain, faster recovery
- Post-op care – Hygiene, shaving / laser hair removal, weight loss
Important information for patients
- Pilonidal sinus is a recurring problem
- Surgery is the permanent solution
- Hygiene, hair removal, weight control are very important
